Albert Wood, 97, of Wichita, Kansas, one of the "Greatest Generation", passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita.
Claude Albert Wood was born on September 8, 1917 in Kansas City, Kansas to William Lenard Wood and Mable Isabel (Higgins) Wood. He was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, graduating from North Side High School in 1936 before moving to Kansas City, Kansas.
In Kansas City, he was employed by Commercial Lithographing Co., as a receiving clerk before being inducted into the Army in 1941. During his four years in the Army he served with distinction in Battery C 209th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, participating in not less than five major battle campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, before being honorably discharged in 1945. Decorations awarded: Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and American Defense Service Medal. Albert was proud of his military service and routinely proclaimed his experiences.
On April 22, 1950, in Gainesville, Texas, he married Onie Louise Jordan. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2003. Albert was employed by, and retired from, Cessna Aircraft, Wichita, Kansas.
Survivors blessed by his memory include his niece, Marsha Brown and husband Paul; nephew Dennis McDonald and wife Nona of Fort Worth, Texas; nephew Van McDonald and wife Becky of Aztec, NM; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews in the Fort Worth area; and longtime friends Douglas Robertson and Deborah Roseke. In addition to his wife, Albert was also preceded in death by his parents; his only sister, Thelma McDonald; and his nephew Dan McDonald.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 9, 2015, at Mt. Washington Cemetery, Lenapah, Oklahoma with full military honors.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made payable to the Robert J. Dole VA Medial Center, Wichita, Kansas; these may also be left with the funeral home.
