Coffeyville resident, Alma Jean Magness passed away Friday, February 15, 2008 in Coffeyville. She was 97. Alma was born November 15, 1910 in Kansas City Missouri to Claude and Grace Alma Phillips McGinnis. She moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma with her family where she attended school and graduated from Tulsa High School in 1928. She then attended Droughns Business College in Tulsa. She and her mother owned and operated two restaurants in Ardmore, Oklahoma from 1936 to 1939 and later opened an apartment building. On November 25, 1939, she married Lynn Charles Magness in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Following their marriage, they moved to Ardmore and owned a cafe for two years. In January 1942, they moved to Oklahoma City and Mrs. Magness worked at Tinker Air Force Base and later Douglas Aircraft Corporation for five years. In 1948 they moved to Everett, Washington while Mr. Magness worked for Boeing Aircraft. The Magness moved to Coffeyville in 1963. Mr. Magness worked for Funk Manufacturing. In 1965 they moved to Liberty, Kansas. Alma moved back to Coffeyville in April 1991 after Mr. Magness passed away in December of 1990. She was a member of the Word of Faith Church in Coffeyville and was a past member of the Order of the Earstern Star in Del City, Oklahoma and Coffeyville. She is survived by her son, Gene L. Magness of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two brothers, Herman C. Woodruff and Stanley E. Woodruff. Graveside services for Mrs. Magness will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Hewitt Cemetery in Wilson, Oklahoma. Pastor Gary Close will officiate. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kansas to sign the guest register. Memorial contributions may be given to the Word of Faith Church of Coffeyville. These may be left with the funeral home.
