Betty Ann McPheeters Brockway. 78, of Coffeyville, Kansas died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. She was born September 4, 1931 in Coffeyville, at Southeast Kansas Hospital to Marvell Kathryne Shultz and Thomas Marion McPheeters, Jr. She lived her childhood years in the area. Her parents presented her with a sister, Carol Sue on August 26, 1935 when they were living in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. Betty Ann attended Longfellow and McKinley grade schools, Roosevelt and Field Kindley High Schools and completed her education at Coffeyville Community College in 1951 with an Associates of Arts Degree. Following graduation, she began a new independent life in Kansas City, Missouri and was employed in several places as a secretary. On January 9, 1955 Hoyt Hugh Brockway and Betty Ann were married at the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri and they continued to live and work in the Kansas City area. However, for several years they lived in Harrisonville and Archie, Missouri commuting into Kansas City each day with her husband working for Bendix Corporation until 1968. She was employed at Westinghouse until they closed and then at Internal Revenue Service until 1968. In 1968 they moved to Indian Village in Coffeyville due to Hughs health and were members of the Central Baptist Church. Hugh died December 3, 1968 and is buried at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Betty Ann returned to Kansas City and employment with Internal Revenue Service until 1973 when she retuned to Coffeyville. She was employed by First National Bank for a short time and Southeast Area VocationalTechnical School, from which she took retirement in 1993 after 20 years service. Bettys father died in 1968 and her mother died in 1994, both from cancer and are buried at Fairview Cemetery also. Church life and her faith in Jesus Christ has always been important to her life. She was a childhood member of the United Brethren Church now Trinity United Methodist in Coffeyville and First Baptist Church as a teenager. While in Kansas City she was active with children at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church. After returning to permanently reside in Coffeyville in 1973 she restored her membership with the First Baptist Church where she was active as an adult Sunday School teacher and taught Bible Studies at Sycamore Landing and Windsor Place Assisted Living, mission advocate, American Baptist Womens Ministries locally, in Crawford Association, the Southeast Kansas Area Association and at Central Region Levels. Throughout her life she was active in community life through Business and Professional Women, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Book Review Club and Christian Womens group. Betty enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing cards, scrabble, reading, tracing family history, traveling and her home. She enjoyed decorating for the holidays and having family and friends share meals with her. She visited all states except Hawaii and Alaska, several provinces of Canada, Mexico and Bahamas with her family and friends. She was a member of the Chief Black Dog Camping Group. She is survived by her nieces and nephews who live in North Platte, Nebraska and her aunt Pauline Knisely of Coffeyville, several cousins and many lifelong loyal friends who were very important to her and her welfare. The family requests donations to the memorial fund of First Baptist Church of Coffeyville or Crosswind Camping and Conference Center, Hesston, Kansas which is devoted to Christian fellowship. Funeral services for Betty Ann Brockway will be held at 10:00a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at PenwellGabel Funeral Home in Coffeyville. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
