Carl Wayne Gruber, 79, of Coffeyville, Kansas, passed away Monday, December 22, 2008 at his home. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Home, 2405 Woodland Avenue, Coffeyville. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Reverend James McDowell will be officiating. Friends may call on Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. that evening. Carl was born on February 28, 1929 in Coffeyville, the son of Elmer and Francis Gruber. After graduating high school, Carl joined the Coffeyville National Guard. He married Opal McDowell in 1947 at Cherryvale, Kansas. She survives of the home. Carl was a building contractor for 55 years working in Coffeyville, Great Bend, and Liberal, Kansas. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling as well as his tractor and farm animals. Carl greatly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He served as a youth leader for his church and Boy Scout leader in Western Kansas. Other survivors include three sons, Robert Gruber and wife, Linda, of Baxter Springs, Kansas, Larry Gruber of Mesa, Arizona, Mike Gruber of Elk City, Kansas and one daughter, Nancy Jo Runyon and husband, Gary of Coffeyville; seven grandchildren, Eric Gruber, Heather Bennett, Tammy Barber, Terry Gruber, Chad Runyon, Chris Gruber and Jen Guthrie and eight great-grandchildren; and five sisters and one brother.
