Charles Cornett

Charles Edward Cornett, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Friday, April 15, 2011 at CRMC. Charles was born in Yale, Oklahoma on July 5, 1924 to Leonard William and Mabel Gertrude Hambleton Cornett. On June 29, 1946 he married Virginia Belle Hufferd and they immediately made their home in the Kansas City area. From 1947 to 1963, Charles was employed at the University of Kansas Medical Center working under Dr. Herbert A. Wenner in the Hixon and Eleanor Taylor Laboratories. He became interested in and studied microbiology becoming the Supervisor of the Tissue Culture Lab. Through those years, Charles was a member of a team working on the cures for polio and cancers. In addition to working at KU Med, in 1954 he established Cornetts Laboratory Animals. He raised and provided animals for research development, shipping worldwide, until 1979. After his wifes death, in 1994, he made Coffeyville, Kansas his home. Charles was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville, Ks. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Stephen, Edgar, Raymond and Chester, and his loving wife, Virginia, in 1994. Charles is survived by his sister Eunice Slife of Chanute, Ks., his son, Charles Edward Cornett, Jr. of Ogden, Utah and, his daughter Cheryl Maye Boutell of Overland Park, KS 6 Grandchildren Robin, Randy, Chase, Amy, Ginger and Aubry and 14 Greatgrandchildren. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who lovingly cared for him during his illness. Charles will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held at PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Funeral Home at 2405 Woodland Ave, Coffeyville, Ks on Friday, April 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. until service time. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Chapel in Coffeyville. Reverend John Collins will officiate. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to a charity of choice. These may be left with the funeral home.
