DeanMeatball Howard Powell was born in Coffeyville, September 9, 1929 to George Jack Grant and Goldie Ora Burris Powell. Following a battle with cancer Dean passed away February 10th at Windsor Place, Coffeyville, at the age of 79 years. Dean attended school at Whittier Elementary, Robbins Community School, Roosevelt Jr. High and graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1947. His special interests during his school years were the FFA Program and the Black Angus calf that he raised. Dean enjoyed farming with his father. He especially loved plowing the long fields that his father rented south of the Brown Mansion. Dean worked at Farmland Refinery for 36 years and retired July 1992. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 123. He was also active in the Robbins Community for several years, worked with his children in the Dearing Bees 4-H program and served on the Robbins School Board for 1 year. Although he enjoyed traveling, camping, woodworking and cooking the love of his life was his family. He met Zelda Marguerette House at Cedar Bluff Camp when he was 17 and she was 16. Deans father died in the spring of 1948 which brought Dean and Marguerette closer and they were married September 19, 1948 at Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church. Dean and Marguerette had three children and raised two granddaughters, Angela and Kimberly Sjolander. In addition to Coffeyville, they lived in Older Parker District, Robbins Community and one year in Albuquerque, NM. Dean was saved and then baptized at the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church July 20, 1945. At the time of his death he was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church. Dean is survived by his wife, and sons, Roger Dean Powell wife Sandy, Duane Howard Powell wife Brenda; grandchildren: Angela Sjolander Tickle husband Jim, Kimberly Sjolander, Melissa Powell Malotte, David Powell wife Shawna, Latisha Powell Wood husband Darrin, Brian Powell wife Cassie, Jennifer Powell and Elizabeth Powell; 13 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and one sister: Donna Powell Wulf husband Dean and several nephews and nieces. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Merideth Powell, his daughter Linda Sue Powell Sjolander and her husband, Jerry and one nephew, Brian Powell. Services will be held Friday, February 13, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Richard Jenkins and Rev. Stephen Heslip will officiate. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabels Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, February 12, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. to sign the guest register. Family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Southern Baptist Church Kitchen Fund or Hospice of Kansas these may be left with the funeral home.
