Edgar JosephDoc Pursley, 93, of Coffeyville, Kansas, died early Friday morning, January 16, 2009 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Doc was born January 11, 1916 at Diggins, Missouri to M.C. Pursley and Lilly Mae Hertweck Pursley. As a small boy, he moved with his parents to Dearing, Kansas where he attended their local schools. On June 23, 1935, he married Doris Wenona Riley in Ash Grove, Missouri. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Missouri where Doc worked on a dairy farm. In 1940, the Pursleys moved to Coffeyville, where he was employed by Ludowici Celadon Tile Company, Multiscope, and in 1949, Doc started work at the Co-op Refinery, where he retired in 1979 as a boiler house operator. Mrs. Pursley worked as a dental assistant, from 1953 to 1960, at which time she became a full-time homemaker. She preceded her husband in death on February 27, 2006. Doc was a member of Coffeyvilles Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He is survived by a sister, Ruth Dickens of Houston, Texas; two grandsons, Kurt Hoobing of Overland Park, Kansas and Heath Hoobing of Roeland Park, Kansas and a son-in-law, Bill Hoobing of Overland Park. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife; one daughter, Sara Jo Hoobing on October 13, 2004; a sister Gladys Shertz, and four brothers, Clarence, A.J., Louie and Charles. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel with Pastor Wayne Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Coffeyvilles Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, 9am 8pm. Donations may be made to the Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church and may be left at the funeral home.
