Estella Ellen Akers passed away at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Wednesday evening, January 13, 2010. She was born December 13, 1927 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Calvert A. and Beryl L. Nelson Durand. Calvert A. Durand was a former chief of the Coffeyville Fire Department, as was his father, Napoleon. Stella attended Coffeyville schools graduating from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1945. On July 12, 1944 she married Robert C. Akers at Edna, Texas. Following their marriage they made their home in Wichita, Kansas and Seattle, Washington. They were later divorced. Mrs. Akers returned to Wichita, Kansas and in 1977 returned to Coffeyville, Kansas. Mrs. Akers was the treasurer for the Issaquah Guild at the Childrens Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle. She also taught swimming for the YMCA in Seattle and Wichita, and had worked as a receptionist and telephone operator while in Wichita. Mrs. Akers is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Akers is survived by two sons, Gary Steven Akers of Yakima, Washington and Kem Richard Akers of Kent, Washington one sister, Marian Louise Bellora of Coffeyville, Kansas three grandchildren, Trinette Akers of Seattle, Washington, Larkin Akers and Derek Akers both of Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Akers was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Calvin Durand. She was a loving mother and a warm and caring person. She will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Chapel in Coffeyville. Reverend Lee Passwater will officiate. Friends may call on Monday, January 18, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to sign the guest register.
