Evelyn Detar

Evelyn M. DeTar was born on a farm in a four room square house Southeast of Coffeyville on February 23, 1931 to Bruce and Ethel (Loe) Murdock.

Evelyn attended Keene School and Walter Johnson School in Montgomery County, Kansas. In 1945 her family moved to a farm southeast of Liberty, Kansas where she attended Roosevelt Jr. High School. She later graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1949. Evelyn graduated from Coffeyville Community College in 1951 where she studied Elementary Education. Evelyn met the love of her life, Don DeTar, while attending Roosevelt Jr. High School. They were married on December 31, 1950. Her first teaching position was at Blackford School in Labette County. It was a one room school with sixteen students. Later she taught school at Pleasant Valley School for five years. In 1958 and 1959 she was a substitute teacher at various schools. In 1959 she taught 1st through 8th grades at Parker School. In the fall of 1960 she started teaching at Union One. It was a two room school where she taught grades 5-8. In 1968 she began teaching at Holy Name School and taught there for 27 years. Evelyn taught for 43 years in various teaching positions in area schools.She enjoyed gardening, especially strawberries, and raising chickens, together with her husband, Don. She loved holidays when all the family could gather together, Christmas and Thanksgiving being her favorite.

Her memory will live on through her husband Don of the home, daughters Karen and her husband Shelby Linnebur, Lois and her significant other Ed Baker, Cheryl and her friend and companion Josh , sons Dwayne and his wife Melinda, Darrell and his wife Cindy, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her Parents and brothers; Eldon, Harold, Harlan and Kenneth.

A service celebrating the life of Evelyn will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 2:00pm at the First Christian Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to sign the register and greet the family on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
