Florence Witherspoon

Florence Ellen Witherspoon, age 97, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Mount St. Francis Nursing Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Florence was born April 20, 1914 in Kansas City, Kansas, daughter of the late Ray and Edith Ulsh Chowning. A graduate of Wyandotte High School, she married Ward Witherspoon at London Heights Methodist Church on July 25, 1937. They moved to Coffeyville, Kansas in 1941. Ward preceded her in death on March 31, 1982. Florence relocated to Colorado Springs in October 2006. Florence was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served as Education Assistant on the staff of the church for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Womens Society and served many positions within the Church. During WWII she was active in the American Red Cross teaching classes in First Aid and Home Nursing. She was an auxiliary member of the Salvation Army and the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. She served as president of Chapter DR PEO, the Lioness Club, Round Table Study Club, Tuesday Book Review Club, and Matinee Musicale. Florence left many footprints in her 97 years. The most consistent were her tireless energy and positive attitude. Survivors include one son, Bruce Diane Witherspoon of Colorado Springs, Colorado three grandchildren, Stephanie Rusty Moss of Hillsboro, Kansas, Laura Tony Lamb of Castle Rock, Colorado and David Christy Witherspoon of Colorado Springs, Colorado: seven greatgrandchildren. Three sisters and one brother also preceded her in death. Graveside Service will be Monday, April 9, 2012, at 9:00 AM at Fairview Cemetery, Coffeyville, Kansas. Reverend John Collins will officiate. Visitation will be at PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Chapel, Coffeyville, on Sunday, April 8, 2012, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
