Gary Vaughn Swigart, 78 of Coffeyville Kansas passed away on November 5, 2015 in Columbus, Nebraska.
Gary was born in Lamoni, Iowa on March 15, 1937 to Cecil and Gladys (Warner) Swigart. Gary went to school in Bedford, Iowa where he graduated in 1955. In 1956 Gary married Carole Ann Pool, the same year moving to Coffeyville Kansas. Gary also attended Coffeyville Community College for his FAA Pilot License.
Gary had several jobs; owned his own gas station, auto mechanic, served in the National Guard as a cook and became a police officer for the Coffeyville Police Dept where he achieved the status of Lieutenant before leaving in 1976. Gary was self-employed for over 20 years and also working for The Car Shop, Gary's Automotive and RBK MFG. In 1977 Gary married Mary Jane Vowell. They owned and operated S & W Sales in Coffeyville, then retiring in 1998. After retirement, they moved to Afton, Oklahoma and resided there until her passing in 2008. In 2009 Gary then married Clara Vesy Loffer until her passing in 2012. Gary enjoyed traveling, such as hunting in Idaho, fishing in Mexico and a special trip to Alaska with Jerry and Gary Jr. He also went to Hawaii and went on several cruises. Some of Gary's interest were being a pilot; flying his own plane, Ham Radio operator and instructor; cooking and woodworking where he made special things for his family.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, and his wife's Carole, Mary Jane and Clara. His grandson, Matthew Paul Swigart. Survivors also include a sister, Bonnie Glover of Coffeyville, KS, a brother Keith (Joyce) Swigart of Oklahoma, a sister Sue (Eldon) Jackson of Coffeyville, KS. Additional survivors are Gary's children; Jerry (Penny) Swigart of Houston TX; Joy (Darryl) Anderson of Columbus, NE; Judy Webb of Emmett Idaho; Gary (Kim) Swigart of Coffeyville, KS ; Stacy (Scott) Rogers of Coffeyville, KS; Greg (Angela) Vowell of Coffeyville, KS and Tony (Brandi) Vowell of Independence, KS; Larry (Tammy)Loffer; Linda(Joe) Ames also from Coffeyville, KS. 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
He was loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at Coffeyville First Nazarene Church on Thursday November 12th at 11:00 am, with the Reverend Ford Hall officiating. Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Ford, Wulf, Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville, Kansas from 1:00 to 8pm to sign the guest register. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-8 pm. online condolences may be left at www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com
