Harold Laverne Wilson age 94 passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 in Coffeyville, Kansas at Medicalodges on Midland where he has resided for the last year.
Laverne was born in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma to Otis “Bus” and Neta Harriet (Webb) Wilson on December 29, 1929. Around the age of four Laverne moved with his parents and sister Jessie to the Hazard Wilson Read farm where his parents became full time care takers of the farm. Laverne and Jessie attended Colony 101 School, north of Coffeyville. Laverne loved the farm and working alongside his dad learning every task necessary. Upon completing his schooling, he worked full time with his dad on the farm until they moved to town in 1948. He then was employed by Coffeyville Packing Company for a while before becoming a maintenance man at Medicalodges on first street until his retirement.
Laverne married Mary Ann Applegate and of that union one son was born, Doug Wilson. The couple later divorced.
In his younger years he enjoyed bowling, he was quite good, always ready and willing to travel to area tournaments with his teammates. In Laverne’s spare time he could be found watching old westerns and wrestling.
Laverne and his family were members of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and later Emmanuel Chapel in South Coffeyville. He and his sister Jessie Russell were faithful attenders until just about 4 years ago. Covid and the need to give up driving made attending difficult.
For all that knew Laverne will remember his quiet nature, that he was an independent man that didn’t shy away from hard work.
Laverne leaves behind his son Doug Wilson, two grandchildren, Tyler and Morgan, sister Jessie Russell, nephews Stephen Russell and his wife Beverly, Tony Russell and his wife Kay, Denny Russell and Brenda, niece Mary and her husband Chuck Ballew, several great nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded death by his brother-in-law Floyd Russell.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 10am prior to Funeral Services beginning at 10:30am at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville, KS. Laverne will be laid to rest next to his parents in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following services. The family request memorial contributions be made payable to either Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Emmanuel Chapel in South Coffeyville and may be left in care of the chapel.
