Helena I. Papen, 82, Coffeyville, Kansas, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Continuous Care Centers of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Helena was born March 29, 1928 at Caney, Kansas to George Lee and Jenny Hasty Lee. She grew up in the Coffeyville area and was a graduate of Field Kindley High School. Helena was working at a drug store at Ninth and Walnut, when she met her future husband, Harold Papen. She and Harold were married June 10, 1946 at Coffeyville. The Papens continued to make their home in Coffeyville until Harolds job change sent them to Kansas City. The couple returned to Coffeyville in the early 1950s. Helena was an assembly line worker for Automotive Controls ACC of Independence, retiring in 1985. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts and fishing, but mostly she loved spoiling her grandchildren. Survivors are two sons, Harold Papen, Jr. and his wife, Renea of Kansas City, Missouri and Jim Papen and his wife, Ingrid of Independence, Kansas one daughter, Linda Trotter and her husband, Dennis of Lawrence, Kansas a brother, Kenneth Lee of Athens, Texas eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents by her husband, Harold Papen, Sr. on February 4, 2005 by five brothers, Les, Lee, Chuck, Morris and Robert Lee and by two sisters, Eva and Vera. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 1, 2010 at PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Chapel with interment to follow at Coffeyvilles Fairview Cemetery. Services and burial are under the direction of PenwellGabel Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Wednesday, 16pm at the funeral home with Helenas family available to receive friends from 68 pm. The family suggests that those who wish donate to the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Foundation and donations may be left at the funeral home.
