John Newton Carey, Sr., 81, Coffeyville, Kansas, died early Thursday morning, November 10, 2011 at St. John Medical Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma. John was born July 31, 1930 at Coffeyville to Thomas Wesley Carey and Lovie Cothran Carey. He grew up in Coffeyville and was a graduate of Field Kindley High School. After high school, John went to work on the pipelines of the area. On March 10, 1950 he was inducted as a member of the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base as a member of the 3338th Technical Training Squad. It was there he met and later married, Annie Love on May 4, 1951 in Borger, Texas. John was Honorably Discharged, September 9, 1953 and the couple returned to Coffeyville. John worked for the City of Coffeyville, reading water and electric meters, a job that he excelled at. He retired in 1995, after 25 years of service. John was a member of Coffeyvilles First Assembly of God, where he faithfully served as a Deacon. He was awarded Meter Reader of the Year for his District and had worked on the tallest oil rig and helped prepare the longest hot dog. John took great pride in preparing the beans for the Interstate Fair and Rodeo Chuckwagon Feed for many years. His favorite place to eat wasAnnies Kitchen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing and cheering for his favorite sports teams. Survivors include his wife, Annie of the home two sons, Dr. John N. Carey, Jr. of Elkhart, Kansas and Ronald Carey and his wife, Patricia of Radcliff, Kentucky two daughters, Pamela Stotts and her husband, Troy of Coffeyville and Anita Mulhall and her husband, Steve of Claremore, Oklahoma one brother, Bill Carey and his wife, Bessie of Nowata, Oklahoma one sister, Esther Covey of Coffeyville ten grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Mary Ann Stotts. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 12, 2011 at First Assembly of God with Pastor Randy DePriest officiating. Committal will take place in the Veterans Patio of Coffeyvilles Fairview Cemetery under the direction of PenwellGabel FordWulf Bruns Chapel. Military honors will be accorded Mr. Carey by VFW Post 1022 and American Legion Post 20. Visitation will be Friday, 18 pm with family receiving guests at the funeral home from 68pm. Memorial donations suggested to First Assembly of God Mission Trip to Bogota, Colombia.
