John William Nokes, 80, of Coffeyville, Kansas died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born September 25, 1928 in Tegarden, Oklahoma to Orie Allen Nokes and Ester Crabb Nokes. He attended school at Pleasant Ridge School in Oklahoma and was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the Korean War. He is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. On January 28, 1964 he married Edith Hastings in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Coffeyville. John worked at Bartlett Milling, Sherwin Williams and was a janitor at Coffeyville Community College until his retirement at age 75. He was a member of the Coffeyville and Caney churches of Christ. He was also a Mason. John loved his dogs, eating his wifes cooking, playing pool and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Edith of the home, brother ElmerMickey Nokes and wife Gladys of Enid, Oklahoma, sisters Darline Laws of Lacyne, Kansas and Olive and Bill Rader of Alva, Oklahoma as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside services for John W. Nokes will be held at Restlawn Cemetery in Coffeyville on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 10:00am. Mr. Nokes will lie in state at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Coffeyville from noon until 8;00pm on Monday.Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home of Coffeyville, Kansas is in charge of arrangements.
