John Roberts

John Burton Roberts, 68, passed away on October 31, 2006 in Cushing, Oklahoma. He was born May 17, 1938 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Harry and Grace Roberts. While in high school he noticed something unusual about a pretty young girl. She had lived out-of-state for a while and spoke with a Wisconsin accent and this caught his attention. John and Kathleen Rogan became high school sweethearts and married on August 18, 1957. After high school graduation, John enlisted in the Air Force. He spent three years in England working in Public Information Service. Returning to the States, John was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base and upon his discharge in 1964, he signed on with KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City as a maintenance engineer. He stayed with Channel 5 for 23 years and moved to KWTV, Channel 9 in 1988. He retired from KWTV in 2001 and moved to Cushing in 2004 to live out his retirement. In his spare time John enjoyed gardening, amateur radio and model railroads. He is survived by son Craig and Sylvia Roberts, Oklahoma City, daughter Brenda and Ray Dick, Cushing, and daughter Theresa and Mike Morris, Cushing; sisters: Mary Belle and Ron Stapleton of Coffeyville, KS and Elizabeth Ann and Ben Pierce of Houston, TX., eight grandchildren Toni Thornton, Jessica Roberts, Doug Linebarger, Lauren Roberts, Meagan Morris, Taylor Morris, Ray Dick II, Kirby and Jennifer Bickel, and five great-grandchildren - Dominique Thornton, Gabrielle Thornton, Annabel Linebarger, Kaleb Bickel, and Karson Bickel, many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife Kathleen and parents Harry and Grace Roberts. Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2006 at the Robbins Cemetery West of Coffeyville, Kansas. Pastor Tony Black will officiate.
