John L. Vakas, M.D. Age 66, of Coffeyville, Kansas died Sunday evening, March 13, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dr. Vakas was born July 14, 1938 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Louis and Thelma Economou Vakas. He graduated from Kansas University Medical School and completed his training in internal medicine at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Vakas continued his medical studies at John Hopkins University. He served in the United States Army as a Captain during the Vietnam Conflict. Captain Vakas served in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand with the 11th Armor Calvary Regiment as a surgeon. He worked for the Veterans Medical Center in Wichita and Oklahoma City. Dr. Vakas opened his private practice in Coffeyville until retirement. He was a member of various medical associations and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1022. He was a baptized communicant of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Coffeyville. Dr. Vakas is survived by: two brothers, George, of Coffeyville, KS Gus, of Wichita, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, March 17 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both of Coffeyville, Kansas. The Reverend Jerry Adinolfi will officiate. Friends may call Wednesday, 1 until 8 p.m. at the chapel.
