Joseph Gato

Joseph Robert Gato, age 81, of Coffeyville, KS passed away on June 7, 2018 at St. Johns Medical Center in Tulsa, OK.

Joseph was born in Scranton, PA on September 1, 1936 to Joseph and Mary Gato. He attended Central High School and graduated from Johnson Trade School. In 1960 he married Catherine Feola and the couple was blessed with three daughters, they later divorced. Joe later married Charlene Shipman in 1985 and the marriage ended in divorce in 1995. Joe proudly served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1961. He worked as a carpenter for American Cabinet Co. for 14 years, and then was self-employed making furniture until he moved his family to Coffeyville in 1975. In Coffeyville, Joe worked for JD Construction for several years then was employed by Medicalodge where he worked for 15 years and then went back to work for himself as a talented craftsman until his retirement in 2001.

Joe was an avid hunter and Fisherman. He really loved hunting deer, quail and pheasant, but his true passion was fishing for rainbow trout. He took great pride in teaching his daughters to fish alongside him. Many weekends were spent with his family at the lake, fishing and picnicking. He also enjoyed attending family gatherings.

Left to honor his memories are his daughters; Teresa Daily, Lisa Foster and Denise Shufeldt her husband Earl, sister Joan White her husband Dr. Donald White, grandchildren; Nicole Scott her husband Donnie, Melissa Collins, her husband Matt, Jason Foster, Matt Daily his wife Cait, Kaylee Wagner her husband David, and Dakota Shufeldt, great-grandchildren; Zachary Scott and Autum Scott, great-great-grandson Chase Shufeldt, nephew John White, and great-niece Jessica White.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends are invited to sign the register and greet the family on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel from 2:00pm to 4:00pm with a short service immediately following. Graveside inurnment will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 10:00 am at Fiarview Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made payable to the family to help defray funeral expenses.
