Joseph Ernest Wilson, Papa Joe, was born August 6, 1947 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Cecil Oda Wilson and Sarah Rebecca Wilson. With his loving children by his side, Joe passed from this life Monday October 22, 2018 at Via Christi St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita Kansas.
Papa Joe lived in Coffeyville nearly his entire life and graduated from Coffeyville High School in 1965. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1972, earning the rank of Sergeant. While in the Air Force, Joe served at North Bend Air Force Station near Hauser, Oregon.
After the service, Joe returned to his hometown and began working at the local refinery. Over the next 45 years, Papa Joe held numerous jobs at the refinery from filling oil barrels to driving a vacuum truck and serving on the fire response team.
He married Nancy Jean Rhodes on October 1, 1971. Together, they had two children; Shelly Jean Kingery and husband Jay of Yukon OK, and Matthew Joseph Wilson and wife Jennifer of Wichita, KS.
Papa Joe was blessed with seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Attending their school and church activities brought him great joy. Joe is preceded in death by his mother, father, and one sister, Frances Ann Smith. He is survived by one sister, Betty Jo Clark, and two brothers, John Cecil Wilson and James Edward Wilson.
Throughout his life, Papa Joe worked to further the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. He was a devoted member of the Bible Baptist Church in Coffeyville. Much like his work at the refinery, Joe worked many jobs at the church, filling needs from handyman to bus driver and cook.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 25 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville. Services will be held at the Bible Baptist Church in Coffeyville, KS on Friday, October 26 at 2:00pm. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to the Bible Baptist Church's Call to Conquer Fund at 701 W 4th Street, Coffeyville, KS 67337, donations may also be left in care of the chapel.
