Lucile Gump

Lucile Gump of Coffeyville passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville after a long and full life at age 99. Lucile, the daughter of Jess and Edith Nitcher, was born in Baldwin City, Kansas February 16, 1910. Her family then moved to their farm at Rantoul, Kansas where she completed school. After high school she attended Sisters of Mercy Nursing School at Independence, Kansas and graduated in 1932. In 1934 Lucile married Cleo Gump and moved to Coffeyville at the home where she had resided until recently. She worked as a registered nurse in the obstetrics department at Coffeyville Memorial hospital from 1949 till her retirement in 1973 helping to bring many new lives into Coffeyville. In retirement Lucile enjoyed traveling to visit her family, local senior citizen activities, serving with the Salvation Army Auxiliary and working in her yard. Mrs. Gump was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo; brother, J. D. Nitcher; and sister, Mabel Rodgers. Surviving to honor her memory is her son, Gary and wife Janice of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; daughter, Karen and husband Sam Johnston of Lampasas, Texas; two grandchildren, Michael Gump of Barre, Massachusetts, Keli-Ann Gump and her husband Josh Gittelman of Austin, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Lucy; nieces, Maxine and husband Roy Duncan of Coffeyville, Jessie Mae and husband Bill Drumeller of Cherryvale; long time neighbors and companions Jody and Glenn Hamby; Sister Janelle Britton; and her personal caregiver and friend, Crystal White. And while all must pass, wonderful memories of her will stay with us forever. Lucile was a kind and intelligent lady, who lived her many years with utmost grace and dignity and a keen sense of humor. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army Coffeyville Chapter in honor of her friends Jody and Glenn Hamby or a charity of your choice, these may be left with the funeral home. Cremation has taken place and a memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville. Reverend John Collins will officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Fiarview Cemetery in Coffeyville.
