Opal Lois Schell, 96, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
Opal was born on April 14, 1919 in Red Rock, Oklahoma to Samuel and Paralee (Powers) Farmer. She attended school at a rural school house that the kids traveled on horseback to get to. She was married to the love of her life, August K. Schell on May 25, 1940 in Independence, Kansas. They went out working for the Defense, building in several locations until August was drafted into service. During that time Opal lived with her parent in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Coffeyville when August returned in 1945.
Opal spent her time taking care of her husband, children and their home. She was an incredible seamstress and an immaculate house keeper. She enjoyed tending to her garden, flowers and plants. Some of her past time was spent crocheting, doing needle point, quilting and making clothes and dresses for the grandchildren.
Opal was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville, Kansas. She was a faithful and devoted member who volunteered at all times. She was a Sunday school teacher and loved sharing the word of God. At the time of her passing she was the oldest member of the church.
She was a member of the EHU home demonstration unit and worked for several years as a tax preparer at H&R Block.
Opal is survived by her daughter, Karen Bartholomew of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Carla Morton of Owasso, Oklahoma, Tracy Smith and husband, Roy of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Carla Gibson of Frontenac, Missouri, Cara Gibson of St. Peters, Missouri; great grandchildren, 1st Lt. Ryan Torres of Ft. Bragg, Alicia Torres-Miller and husband, Daniel of St Charles, Missouri, Megan Smith, Katlin Smith and Cheyenne Smith all of Catoosa, Oklahoma; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Paralee; loving husband, August; son, Larry D. Schell; eight brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville, Kansas. Dr. Wayne Norton will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends.
