Opal Love Smith, 79, of Coffeyville, Kansas, died early Monday morning, January 25, 2010 at Windsor Place Care Center of Coffeyville. Opal was born April 5, 1930 at Rose Hill, Oklahoma. She and her mother, Annie Mae Harrison, came to Coffeyville from Rose Hill, when Opal was very young. Opal grew up in Coffeyville and became a lifelong resident. She attended Cleveland School and was a member of the Sardis First Missionary Baptist Church in Coffeyville. She was united in marriage to John H. Hicks in 1948 at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He preceded her in death in 1974. She then married William Smith Jr. in June of 1994. Opal was a member of the Countess Club and Eastern Star. She was an excellent cook and homemaker and was known by family and friends alike as a caregiver to others. She loved her family and talking on the phone. Survivors include her husband, William Smith, Jr. of the home a son, Maurice G. Cherry of Coffeyville, KS four daughters, Roberta Edwards and her husband, Al of Wichita, KS, Marie A. Johnson and her husband, Robert of Coffeyville, Louise Walker and her husband, William of Tulsa, OK and Opal L. Phelps and her husband, Bozzie of Bartlesville, OK two stepdaughters, Jane Smith of Port Smith, Virginia and Toni Smith of Las Vegas, NV three nieces, Lorene Green and her husband, Earl of Spiro, OK, Sandy Kennard of Tulsa and Charlesetta Rogers of Tulsa one nephew, Ray Davis of Coffeyville, KS numerous grandchildren greatgrandchildren and greatgreatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents by a stepson, Roger Smith by one brother, Henry Williams by a sister, Emma L. Cherry and by a nephew, Arnal Davis. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Sardis First Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Virgil Horn officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of PenwellGabel FordWulfBruns Chapel. Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday from 68 pm.
