Robert Merchant, Sr.

Robert L. Merchant, Sr. 1932 2004 Robert L. Merchant, Sr., age 72, Coffeyville, Kansas resident passed away on December 10, 2004 at the Windsor Place Nursing Home in Coffeyville, Kansas. He was born on November 3, 1932 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Lee Walter and Cora May Merrell Merchant. Mr. Merchant attended rural Coffeyville Elementary School as a child. He was a 1950 graduate of Field Kindley Memorial High School. He was a 1952 graduate of Coffeyville Community College. After college Mr. Merchant served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed with Sherman Williams for 23 years. He later worked for the City of Coffeyville when he retired in 1997. Mr. Merchant and his wife Louise were owneroperators of the Pig Stand in Coffeyville from 1985 2003. He was a member of the American Legion of Coffeyville. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, trapping, bowling, coaching little league baseball most of all spending time with his grandchildren and family reunions. On June 7, 1958 he married Louise Barbara Van Dorn in Coffeyville, Kansas at the First Baptist Church. They have celebrated more than 46 years of marriage, where they have made their home in Coffeyville. She survives at Windsor Place Nursing Home. He is also survived by One son, Robert L. Merchant, Jr., South Haven, Mn.; two daughters, Kelly Burnick, Mulberry, Ks.; Christy Stimpson, Greenwood, Mo. Six grandchildren Three brothers Dan Merchant of Caney, Ks.; Walt Merchant of Coffeyville, Ks. Joe Merchant of Independence, Ks. Two sisters, Betty Holder, Baldwin, Ks.; Ann Caughron, Terrell, Tx. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one infant brother, James one brother Clarence Merchant. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Graves Chapel. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 13, 2004 at the Penwell-Gabel Graves Chapel, 1117 W. 8th Street, Coffeyville, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, rural Coffeyville. Rev. Wayne Norton of First Baptist Church of Coffeyville will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association or Alzheimers Association co Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns are handling arrangements.
