Roberta Scofield Age 91, received her final promotion to glory 6 p.m., March 2, 2005. Roberta was born December 24, 1913 in Erie, Kansas to Robert Emerson and Rosa Mae Chastain Bixby. She attended Coffeyville schools, and was in the first graduating class of Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1933. As a young girl, she worked with children of tuberculoses families at Legionville Home for Children. On June 1, 1933 she married Warren Wendell Scofield in her parents home in Coffeyville and established their home in Independence. They moved from Independence to Coffeyville in June, 1944. Warren was an electrician for Missouri Pacific Railroad, and was transferred to North Little Rock, Arkansas in October 1970. He retired in July 1972 and they returned to their home in Coffeyville. They had three daughters: Madeline Virginia Hamacher, Bessie Mae Scofield, Peggy Joan Scofield and one son, James Warren Scofield. Roberta was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and sewing. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, and in her early years was in charge of the Cradle Roll department of the Sunday School. At various times she was the director of Missionettes; she was a member of the choir, and coordinator of funeral dinners. She was also a member of Navy Mothers and a volunteer for Pioneer Chapter of the American Red Cross. After the death of her husband November 11, 1976 she would join her sons family while he was deployed with the United States Navy. The pride and joy of her life was her one and only grandson, Jason. She delighted in telling and he in hearing stories, and thesestories were of family history. A very deep bond grew between them, and she was proud to be able to attend his wedding in Florida last year. Survivors include daughters, Bessie and Peggy, of Coffeyville; son, James and his wife Amelia, of Silverdale, Washington; grandson, Jason and wife Cherilynn, currently in the US Navy stationed at Harrogate, England; sister Peggy Jane Anderson and husband Leonard, of Crosby, North Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, daughter Madeline, and three brothers: Billie, Jack and Harry, preceded her in death. Promotion celebration will be 2 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2005 in the First Assembly of God Church in Coffeyville with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas. Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, Saturday 1 until 8 p.m. and Sunday 1 until 5 p.m. The family will receive guests Saturday evening 6 until 7 p.m. The family would welcome memorials to First Assembly of God Church, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
