Roy Kenneth Hartwig of Coffeyville passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at his home. He was 79. Roy was born May 30, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to William and Goldie Hartwig. Roy attended Nowata schools until enlisting in the Army where he earned the rank of PFC in the 11th Airborne unit, he had completed 14 jumps. Roy was honorably discharged in October of 1949. On May 8, 1965 in Stilwell, Oklahoma he was united in marriage to Jeanne Roberson of Nowata, Oklahoma. In 1966 the couple moved to Coffeyville where they raised their family. He was active in the community through his support of the First Presbyterian Church, 4-H, Shriners, Montgomery County Rural Water District 7 Board of Directors, and Quiet Birdmen. Roy put his many talents to work designing and building special-use equipment, repairing machinery, rehabilitating old El Caminos, and leather crafting. Anyone who knew him could not miss that his passion was for airplanes. He was an avid pilot, aircraft mechanic, sheet metal craftsman, flight instructor; and fixed base operator. In his early piloting career he logged thousands of hours traveling extensively throughout the U.S. for H.C Price Company. Ultimately landing in Coffeyville, he bought and expanded Coffeyville Aircraft in 1974. He actively ran the Coffeyville Municipal Airport fixed base operation for 35 years. Surviving to honor his memory is his loving wife of the home, Jeanne; sons, John Cambron Jr. of Coffeyville and Joel Cambron of Briarcliff Manor, NY; daughters, Jacque Hughey and Julia Vaughn both of Coffeyville; Joan Cambron of Austin, TX; Janie Hartwig-Smith of Bonner Springs, KS; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother Billy Ray Hartwig. A funeral service will be held Monday, April 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Coffeyville. Reverend Diane Massey will officiate. Burial will follow at the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Nowata, Oklahoma. Friends may call on Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to sign the guest register at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday. Friends may donate to the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of their choice, in Roys honor. Donations may be left at the funeral home.
