Samuel C. Burge, Sr. Coffeyville resident Sam Burge died Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in Coffeyville. He was 88. Samuel C. Burge, Sr. was born October 31, 1917 in Bates County, Missouri to Ezra T. and Bertha E. Short Burge. He attended rural school district 71, also known as Grand View, South of Virginia, Missouri. As a young man, he worked on the family farm. On February 27, 1939 he moved to Coffeyville and began employment at Jenson Brothers Manufacturing. In 1941, he began military service in the United States Army and was moved to the European Theator of Operations. He fought in the battles and campains of Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley with the 411th Ord MM Company supervising front line automotive equipment. He was discharged in 1945 at the rank of Staff Sargeant. On October 1, 1949 he was married to Alice J. Smith in Eureka, Springs, Arkansas, Mrs. Burge was a homemaker. Sam returned to Jenson Brothers and the machine shop, working as a machinist and set up man. He retired as a supervisor on March 2, 1984 after 44 12 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1022, the Keystone Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. amp; A.M and also the American Legion Post 20 all of Coffeyville. Hobbies include hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. Sam made small wooden trains, airplanes, cars and telephones. Survivors include two sons Samuel C. Burge, Jr. of Dearing, Kansas and Philip Burge of Cherryvale, Kansas. There are eight grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice Burge on May 10, 1996 and four brothers Lewis A., John R., Turner H. and William R. Burge. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 22, 2006 in the Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Gerald Morris will officiate and burial will follow in the Penwell-Gabel Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Funeral Home of Coffeyville. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of other remembrances, The family has requested memorials may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation 7528 Kedale Skokie, Illinois 60076. These may be left with the funeral home.
