Sam A. Knight, age 96 went to be with the Lord on February 25, 2017. Sam was a resident of the Mt. Vernon Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.
He was born on May 20, 1920 to Samuel Cepheus and Mary (Paulk) Knight in Caney, Kansas. When Sam was young, he enjoyed spending time on the banks of the Caney River with his brother Jay and squirrel hunting. He attended school in Caney until he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He started working in Coffeyville at Ozark Smelter and Mining (Sherwin Williams) in 1938.
He was drafted in December of 1941 into the Army Air Corps and served in World War II. He served on the island of Saipan in the Pacific.
Sam married the love of his life, Mary Chaney on December 23, 1941. They lived most of their lives in Coffeyville, Kansas. He returned to work at Sherwin Williams after his honorable discharge from the military. He retired from Sherwin Williams in 1978 after 40 years of service including his time in the Army Air Corps.
Sam was dedicated to his family and displayed unparalleled commitment to his wife during the 63 years of their marriage. He was extremely active and could be found riding his bike around Coffeyville well into his 90's. He liked cars and taking road trips with Mary. He enjoyed shooting skeet and hunting. Sam was quite a storyteller in his older years.
Survivors include: sister, Mary D. Lounsbury of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Karen James and her husband Hugh of Seminole, Florida; two sons, Sam Jr. of Bois D' Arc, Missouri; Ron and wife Kathy of Jay, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren, Brian and wife Becky of Lafayette, Indiana; Amy Reed and husband Clay of Oklahoma City; Daniel and wife Ana of Kailua, Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 2005, his parents, sister, Emerene; and brother, Jay.
A visitation will be held at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Avenue, Coffeyville, Kansas from 11:00 AM to 12 noon on Wednesday March 1, 2017. Services will be at the Fairview Cemetery Veterans Memorial Patio on Wednesday March 1, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Lee Passwater officiating.
Sam was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, 1001 West Eight Street in Coffeyville, Kansas 67337. Memorial Donations may be made to his church home in his name.
