Shelley WilliamBill Smith, 86, or rural Wann, Oklahoma, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at his home. Bill was born October 4, 1922 at South Coffeyville, Oklahoma to Shelley Keys Smith and Julia Mae Knisely Smith. He grew up in the South Coffeyville area and received his education there. Bill served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in New Guinea. He received his Honorable Discharge in January of 1946 and on February 4, 1946 married Dorothy M. Gatlin at Coffeyville, Kansas. The Smiths made their home in South Coffeyville before moving to the Wann area five years ago. Bill had been employed by Nutrina Mills, Robinson Packer and worked at Amazon for Sooner State Janitorial Services. He retired 13 years ago and spent his timetinkering around his place, doing chores and working with his two horses. Bill was a member of the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers, Mound Valley Chapter. He enjoyed spending time with his Boston Terrier,Rosie and his three great-grandchildren. Survivors include one son, George Smith of Wann; a daughter, Patsy Brooks and her husband, Dale of South Coffeyville; three sisters, Julia Mae Smith and Peggy Lungberger, both of South Coffeyville and Joyce Lea Banta of Coffeyville; two grandchildren, David Clark of Irvine, California and Pamela Dotson and her husband, Robert of Wann and three great-grandchildren, Jesse, Dalton and Billy Dotson, of Wann. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Dorothy, on February 4, 2007; by a son, Tony L. Smith on September 10, 2006 and by a brother, Anzle Eugene Smith. Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Friday, February 20, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel with Reverend Ginny Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Penwell-Gabels Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites accorded by VFW Post 1022American Legion Post 20. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, 9am-8pm and family will receive guests from 6-8pm. The family suggests donations to the Gideons International or the charity of their choice. Any donations may be left at the funeral home.
