Susie Mae Hayes

Susie Mae (Colbert) Hayes, age 80 of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away with her family by her side in her home.

Susie Mae (Colbert) Hayes was born on October 8, 1942, just south of Coffeyville in Noxie, Oklahoma to Charles and Clara (Terry) Colbert.  Susie was one of twelve children, she attended Cleveland Elementary School and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School and took shorthand classes at Coffeyville Community College.

She married Lawrence Teti Hayes and started a family.  Susie was working at the Parsons Ammunition Plant then later moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1968.  Where she began working at the Hilton Plaza Inn and furthered her education.  In 1989 Susie moved back to Coffeyville, Kansas to be near family. Susie began working at Super 8 until she retired.

Susie was a devoted, hardworking, and feisty woman who loved her family fiercely, especially her children and her grandchildren. She offered support to her family and others in many ways, she was always a good listener helping those who just needed to talk. Though she was good a listening she wasn’t afraid to share her opinion and she always shot it to you straight. That is why everyone loved her, she was real with everyone.

Susie enjoyed preparing delicious food for her family, listening to music, hosting a family BBQ, and taking her chances with scratch-off tickets.  Though she didn’t ever become a millionaire she did enjoy the excitement of what winnings were behind the scratch off.

Surviving to cherish her memory are, Sheretta Chapman (Louis), Lawrence Hayes Jr. (Betty), Jerry Mayfield (Angel), Julie McCarrell (Anthony Sweeney), Charles Mayfield (Patricia) all of Coffeyville, Kansas; twenty grandchildren that adored her; numerous great grandchildren; brothers Oliver Colbert Sr. of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Herman Colbert of Texas, and sister Carolyn Cain of Wichita, Kansas a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.  Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara (Terry) Colbert, her late husband Lawrence Hayes Sr., siblings Leonard Colbert, James Colbert, Renzie Colbert, Donnie Colbert, Marlon Colbert, Nathaniel Colbert, Elizabeth Lewis, and an infant brother.
