Vera M. Peace, 107, of Coffeyville, Kansas died Saturday, February 07, 2009 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Vera was born September 11, 1901 at Kentlard, Indiana to Albert Timmons and Auda Spriggs Timmons. She grew up in Indiana and moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where her mother was one of the firstlady judges in the territory. Vera met Carl H. Peace and the couple was married on December 17, 1921 at Mountain View, Missouri. Carl and Vera made their home in Mountain View until 1930. At that time, the couple moved to Potosi, Missouri and in 1943 became residents of Coffeyville. Vera worked for H.W. Read Department Store for 21 years and for extra money, made cakes for various members of the community, specializing in Angel Food and Devils Food cakes. At the age of 70, she retired from Reads in 1971. Vera enjoyed crocheting, reading, music and listening to the radio. Her baking skills earned her many blue ribbons at both the Coffeyville Inter-State Fair and the Oklahoma State Fair, in Oklahoma City. She was a member of Coffeyvilles First United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Popken and her husband, Louis of Arlington, Texas and Betty Sullivan and her husband, John of Coffeyville; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Vera was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Carl on February 10, 1982; by a daughter, Helen Bateman in 1996 and by four brothers, Harry, Charles, Frank and George Timmons. Funeral services will be held 10AM, Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel with Rev. John Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Coffeyvilles Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 PM, Monday and family will receive friends from 6-7 PM. The family suggests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, Coffeyville and donations may be left at the funeral home.
