Mrs. Verna Mae Scott Hendrix was born October 1, 1921 to the union of the late Bennie and Nancy Johnson Scott in Blevins, Arkansas, Hempstead County. Mrs. Hendrix left this earthly life on April 8, 2009 to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mrs. Hendrix accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Shorter Chapel AME Church, Green Hill AME Church. Later, after moving to Coffeyville, Kansas, she united with the Sardis Baptist and Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Hendrix was a faithful member in all of these churches and excelled her musical talents. She loved to sing and play the piano. Music was a God given talent. Mrs. Hendrix received her early education from the Iron Springs School District, Blevins, Arkansas. She was a graduate of Blevins School District, Blevins, Arkansas in 1943. Mrs. Hendrix attended AMamp;N College, Pine Bluff, where she received a BSE degree, post graduate work at Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas and UCA in Conway, Arkansas. She began her teaching career very early. Her first teaching assignment was with the Antioch Community School, Emmet, Arkansas, later the Blevins Training School District. Even though she did not have children of her own, she was loved and respected by many children. She touched the lives of many and her greatness as being a role model will live on in their hearts forever. Mrs. Hendrix united in holy matrimony to Will L. Hendrix in 1970. They were a fun-loving couple and they enjoyed each other very much. Mrs. Hendrix later moved to Coffeyville, Kansas. She continued her teaching career. She retired from Whitter Elementary School, Coffeyville, Kansas in 1985. Mrs. Hendrix continued to be active with her church activities. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star E. U. Reed Chapter 216, Blevins, Arkansas. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Chapter. She served in many civic, social, church and professional organizations. She was always willing to work and help where she was needed and always concerned about her family and friends. In 2007, Mrs. Hendrix moved back to her home in Blevins. She wanted to be close to her family and friends. She united with Shorter Chapel AME Church family again. She was a mother to Joyce. Mrs. Hendrix Aunt Verna was a surrogate mother to Cleytus and Jessica. A devoted sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and teacher. She was a loyal friend to all. Mrs. Hendrix was admired and respected by those who knew her. Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, mother-in-law and husband. Mrs. Hendrix leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Joyce Riley Cartwright of Parsons, Kansas; one sister, Ruby Faye Charlie Odgen of Hope, Arkansas; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hendrix of Coffeyville, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Azelea Scott; one special niece and daughter, Cleytus and Jessica Dixon; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
