Walter Jerold Harrington, 85, of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Nowata Nursing Home in Nowata, Oklahoma.
Jerold was born on February 2, 1928 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Walter D. and Mamie Zeigler Harrington. He grew up in the South Coffeyville, Oklahoma area where he attended school and graduated from Lenapah High School. After high school he served in the United States Army, from 1946 to 1947 when he received his honorable discharge.
On March 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Thelma Jean Jordan in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in South Coffeyville. Jerold worked at the Coffeyville Packing Company and Edgewood Market as a Butcher. He was a member of the Trinity Full Gospel Church in Nowata, Oklahoma. He was a founding member and past president of the South Coffeyville Lions Club in which he was extremely active. Jerold was also active in the Campers and Friends Camping Club. He was a member of the VFW Post 1022 in Coffeyville and was a past board member at Emmanuel Chapel.
Jerold was very active in sports in his youth as well as in later years with the Industrial Leagues. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating and water skiing. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving to honor his memory is his loving wife of 64 years, Jean of the home daughters, Cheryl Young and husband, Lloyd of Georgetown, Kentucky, Susan DeHaven and husband, David of Lawton, Oklahoma, Terrie Hayes and husband, Keith of Coffeyville, Kansas brother, Charles Harrington sister, Maxine Pevehouse both of Coffeyville, Kansas grandchildren, Joshua, Jason, Jill, Jamie, Nathan, Lisa, Todd seven greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mamie and a sister, Marie Crawford.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at FordWulfBruns Chapel in Coffeyville, Kansas. Pastor Jimmy Harrington will officiate. Interment will follow at Veterans Patio at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 9 am until 8 pm at the funeral home to sign the guest register. Family will greet friends Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6 pm until 8 pm. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the Trinity Full Gospel Church of Nowata, Oklahoma these may be left with the funeral home.
