Walter WilliamWalt Huffer, Jr., 84, of Caney, Kansas, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at his home. Walt was born August 11, 1924 at Caney, Kansas to Walter William Huffer, Sr. and Berthan Winebrenner Huffer. He grew up in the CaneyPeru area and was educated there as well. Walt joined to U.S. Army during World War II and sustained shrapnel wounds to his left arm and hip during the Italian Campaign. For his service, Walt was awarded the Purple Heart. After his honorary discharge, he returned to Kansas. Walt was a police officer for 25 years, serving in Winfield, Kansas as well as in Colorado. He retired from Spears Manufacturing Co. working in that companys Security detail. Walt was well-known and active in the Caney and Peru communities, serving as mayor of Peru and Chief of Police at Caney. He enjoyed hunting small game; fishing and raising cattle. He was particularly fond of his International Harvester tractor. Walt was a member of the Caney American Legion and was a fixture at both the Caney Kitchen and the Copan Truck Stop. Survivors include one son, Dan Huffer and his wife, Dianne of Littleton, Colorado; a daughter, Pamela Houck and her husband, Paul of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Twila Nutter of Caney; four grandchildren, Kenneth and Keith Huffer and Clay and Shannon Hart and two great-grandchildren, Brittany Huffer and Shelby Arthur. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Jim Bishop. A memorial service will be held 10 A.M., Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville, Kansas with Dr. Wayne Norton officiating. Friends may sign the register book at the funeral home each day preceding the service until 5 P.M.
